Continuum IR emission of Be star wind-compressed discs

چکیده

A prescription for the density of a wind compressed disc (WCD) is given and the IRemissionof the disc is calculated. The prescription enables emission fromWCDs to be calculated simply without recourse to full 2 1 2 -dimensional (2 1 2 -D) modelling of rotating radiatively driven winds. It is shown that the standard WCD model is incapable of representing observed Be star discs. As a guide for future research, various addenda to theWCD model are considered: internal density structure of the disc, decoupling of thematter and radiation fields in thewind and finally magnetic fields. Of these, it is only a magnetic field which may be sufficient as a suffix to bring the WCD model into line with observations. The magnetic field strength must be tens of gauss to begin to reproduce observations.

On the optical–infra-red continuum emission from equatorial discs of supergiant B[e] stars

Two models of the circumstellar disc around supergiant B[e] stars are discussed: an equatorial wind model produced by wind bi-stability, and a Keplerian viscous disc model. Both models are successful in providing a site for dust formation once they have cooled sufficiently. However, the optical–infra-red continuum is calculated and it is found that both models have significant trouble in accoun...

On outflowing viscous disc models for Be stars

It is assumed that Be star discs are driven by viscosity. Emission from disc models is calculated and is confronted with continuum observations. It is found that the outflowing viscous disc models can reproduce the observed IR continuum emission. However, to exist as outflowing discs, either the discs are significantly acted upon by the stellar radiation field and/or there is significant coolin...

Radio observations of the planetary nebula around the OH / IR Star OH 354 . 88 - 0 . 54 ( V 1018 Sco )

We present radio observations of the unique, recently formed, planetary nebula (PN) associated with a very long-period OH/IR variable star V1018 Sco that is unequivocally still in its asymptotic giant branch phase. Two regions within the optical nebula are clearly detected in nonthermal radio continuum emission, with radio spectral indices comparable to those seen in colliding-wind Wolf-Rayet b...

Excess mid-IR Emission in Cataclysmic Variables

We present a search for excess mid-IR emission due to circumbinary material in the orbital plane of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Our motivation stems from the fact that the strong braking exerted by a circumbinary (CB) disc on the binary system could explain several puzzles in our current understanding of CV evolution. Since theoretical estimates predict that the emission from a CB disc can dom...

Observations with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) SWS spectrometer are used to constrain the velocity law and wind clumping of the well-studied Wolf-Rayet (WR) star WR 136 (HD 192163) (WN6). Because the free-free continuum opacity in WR winds increases steadily with wavelength in the IR, each point in the continuous spectrum may be regarded as forming in a pseudo-photosphere of larger radi...
